8  Principles for Dealing with Anger

Proverbs says, “He who is slow to anger is better than the
mighty, and he who rules his spirit than he who takes a city”
(Proverbs 16:32).  I mentioned this at the end of the last part.  If
we are to manage anger, we first must learn to “rule” our spirit.
The main idea of “rule” here is control.  God has given us the
ability to control our lives, God gives us the capacity to choose

Part 4
We are looking at “8 Principles for Dealing With Anger” from
the book of Proverbs.

5.        Develop Discretion

“The discretion of a man makes him slow to
anger, and his glory is to overlook a
       transgression.”    Proverbs 19:11

“Discretion” is the ability to differentiate and identify what is
appropriate and what is not appropriate in our response to
others.  It is a mark of maturity.  So for example, someone
makes a comment that is provocative or inflammatory, how do
we respond?

But women in our society are angry too.  Four times in the
book of Proverbs the subject of an angry women comes up.
Proverbs describes her as an angry and contentious woman (21:
9; 21:19; 25:24; 27:15).  The picture painted here is not a
sunny and optimistic view of this type of woman.  Her life is filled
with anger and she is a constant nag who drips with anger like a
steady and relentless rain.

In one place, we are told it is better to live in the desert alone
than with her.  In another we are told it is better to live on one
tiny corner of the housetop rather than “in” the house with her!
One guy asked me after the service the other day if I would help
him move his things to the roof and wondered if his cable could
be hooked up to the roof of his home!
